Who You Are

What are your responsibilities? 

Technical design takes a 2 dimensional sketch and creates a 3 dimensional product, and then engineers the product for sample through bulk manufacturing. As Patternmaker, you are responsible for creating new silhouettes for a specific group of products for our company, and you will support our innovation and design team on new concepts including silhouette, proportion and construction standards for the individual Brand. You ensure that our patterns execute to the Brand standards to ensure consistency in fit, and that construction standards and quality are met. This includes being experienced and will to do the following:

  • Translate 2D Design concept from sketch form into a 3D product by developing a pattern or measurement specifications that take into account fabric, silhouette and proportion
  • Collaborate with Design and innovation to obtain clear direction and consensus on design aesthetic, fit intent and construction across brands
  • Responsible for drafting or draping patterns for new product silhouettes that reflect the fit and balance for the individual Brands
  • Complete technical packages including measurements, construction details and technical sketches
  • Spec garments and record accurate measurements on spec sheets
  • Illustrate pattern corrections and style comments with Photoshop or Illustrator
  • Lead fit sessions on live model and work with Design to achieve design aesthetic and communicate fit and balance to cross functional partners, brands and aesthetics
  • Engineer garments for bulk production while maintaining Studio 317 construction and quality standards
  • Effectively communicate fit intent, balance and construction to Design Manager, Sample makers and other Designers
  • Identify potential production, quality or costing issues and make appropriate recommendations while maintaining design and fit intent
  • Ensure size and fit consistency for Development with fit models independent across brands
  • Manage workflow and ensure deadlines are met with sample and production team
  • Participate in departmental and cross functional brand meetings as necessary
  • Identify and proactively surface and communicate business issues to cross functional brands and provide recommendations and solutions to ensure deliverables are met
  • Anticipate when to escalate issues to design manager and provide timely and accurate information to ensure quick decision making and resolution
  • Understand the competition and provide research and analysis in current and future trends and technology in the marketplace as needed
  • Foster open communication and team environment with all cross functional brands and be open to receive constructive feedback
  • Hold self and others accountable for work outcomes

What experience and qualifications do you need? You must also have: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Patternmaking or equivalent degree or experience
  • 5 - 10 years of experience in the apparel industry as a patternmaker or draper
  • Subject Matter Expert in Development or Production patternmaking, construction and fit for multiple products and brands
  • Relationship Management: ability to build constructive and effective relationships with all cross functional brands and partners
  • Presentation Skills: ability to effectively communicate fit to Design
  • Influencing and Negotiation: ability to present ideas and direction that lead others to action
  • Planning and Priority Setting: ability to organize work appropriately to meet and exceed department goals and objectives
  • Process Management: ability to follow process to get things done efficiently and effectively complete workload
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills Exceptional listening, written and oral communication skills
  • Systems and Tool Acumen
  • Proficiency in computer patternmaking programs: Optitex, Gerber, Lectra
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, Powerpoint, Adobe Illustrator
